Why Affirmations?
So, if you are hearing about affirmation first time, these all might sound crazy! Well, I don’t blame you. But give me a chance to explain the science behind it, then it’s totally your call!
We seek approval of others…
So whether you believe or not, the truth is that most of social human being as affected by this physiological process. If you observe carefully, you are always seeking approval of others in your day to day life. You are just not conscious enough to see it. Let me bring you some examples…
• You maintain your dressing sense in certain way. Why? You are seeking approval by others that what you wear is liked by all & thus give you pleasure of taking pride or appraisal! You might think it’s for your own joy, you are not looking for approval. But the thing is you have defined your joy to be fulfilled if they appraise you! Yet another approval!
• If you are Husband/Wife, Parent/Child or in any relationship, you always expect something. Parent is expecting something from child, Child is expecting something from parent. No matter on what end of this expectation bridge you are, it’s always liked with approval. When one end is expecting, the other end will result in the behaviour which seeks approval of the other.
We are defined by what we believe…
Alright. So agree that we seek for approval of others but what it has to do with affirmations? Well, just hold on… We need one more step to reach that part. That part is “what shapes us the way we are”. We are defined by what we believe & what we accept. People never really believe in themselves (Unless you are in Buddha state!). Let me give you an example again.
If you are walking the street & someone just tell you, “Hey, your face is looking dull yellowish & eyes appears deep. Are you ok?” You might say that I am completely fine as you don’t feel anything wrong! After a while, someone else says the same to you. You still might say him/her that you are fine but this time you would have li’l doubt in your mind. After sometime, if yet another person says you the same, this time you won’t be sure. You will get convinced that something is wrong & you will come home & look into mirror. Now that you are convinced, you even start to find that something is wrong!
This is what exactly happening with you all the time in many aspect of your life! You start believing & you become it. & surprising part is that your belief is defined more by others instead of yourself!
Now coming to the point…
So, it is like if everybody keeps on telling one guy that he is a useless person, one day his confidence will get broken down to the point where he starts believing them & would become what they say! It was never like he was that person. It’s constant echo in his mind that he heard from others & started believing it.
So, point is if something is told to you repeatedly over the time, your mind will start accepting it eventually. Repetition trains our mind that way. Just like you want to memorize something you will repeat it several times & it will become permanent footprint in your mind.
So, if you are with me so far, you agree that your mind start believing what it’s told repeatedly over the time. Then why not to use this behaviour as advantage instead of looking at it as issue! You should throw all great & positive things at your mind regularly so that it start believing it & ultimately it becomes it!
One more thing…
So, whole idea is that you whisper positive things & gradually they start happening around you if your feelings are pure & mind is clear! While doing affirmations, it’s important that you focus on good things. It brings your attention to the stuffs which are really great & you are taking them for granted without expressing even thankfulness. Here frequency of repetition is less important than feelings it triggers inside you while doing affirmation. That is the key behind affirmations.
